Relatives include the widespread duckweed, skunk cabbage, calla lily and Jack-in-the-pulpit. During the first stage, carrion beetles drawn by the stench of demise and human-like body temperatures, creep inside the vase-like structure and unknowingly deposit pollen on the receptive feminine flowers. During the second stage, the structure begins to break down, the "fragrance" fades and the bugs start to head out. As they leave, the beetles rub up in opposition to the pollen in the male flowers and at the moment are ready to carry the pollen to a close-by female flower. Only a handful of these strange Indonesian crops bloom each year at public gardens worldwide. SDBG is the one known garden within the region that grows this unique species.
