Relatives include the frequent duckweed, skunk cabbage, calla lily and Jack-in-the-pulpit. During the primary stage, carrion beetles drawn by the stench of dying and human-like body temperatures, creep contained in the vase-like construction and unknowingly deposit pollen on the receptive female flowers. During the second stage, the construction begins to break down, the "perfume" fades and the insects begin to head out. As they go away, the beetles rub up towards the pollen in the male flowers and at the second are ready to carry the pollen to a nearby female flower. Only a handful of those strange Indonesian vegetation bloom every year at public gardens worldwide. SDBG is the only recognized garden in the area that grows this unique species.
